The whole process seems too mechanical. What can I do?

Yes, initially the practice of seeking first to understand may seem mechanical. But eventually, as we keep practicing, it becomes a part of our nature. 

For example, do you remember the time when you were learning a new language? A language that is not your mother tongue. It took conscious effort, right? 

Similarly, the language of listening also takes time. It may seem effortful in the beginning, but with time, it becomes flowy and effortless.
